What is Adjusted basis?

A tax basis calculation referring to the original cost of a property plus the cost of any improvements or other step-ups less depreciation. Adjusting the original cost of a purchase by taking into account any changes to its value is used to calculate the capital gain/loss on a sale for tax purposes.
